Build a listening habit, not a shelf of guesses.
Start with a proper turntable, powered speakers or an existing hi-fi input and three records you genuinely want to hear. Learn grading, setup and gentle cleaning before collecting volume.

Buy the playback chain before buying a large collection
Use a proper entry-level turntable with a replaceable stylus and built-in phono stage, connect it to powered speakers or a line input and place it on stable level furniture. Buy one new record and two used records you already know, inspect used copies under bright light and learn the seller’s grading scale. Brush loose dust before play, lower the stylus with the cueing control and return every disc to a clean inner sleeve.

A turntable needs a phono preamp somewhere in the chain. A built-in switchable phono stage simplifies connection to ordinary powered speakers.

Suitcase players trade tracking, speakers and upgradeability for portability; they are not the best baseline for judging records.

What to expect
Every click has more than one possible cause
Noise can come from the pressing, groove wear, static, dirt, a dirty or worn stylus, poor setup, speaker vibration or an electrical connection.
Turntable
Automatic entry models reduce setup decisions; manual decks expose more adjustment and upgrade choices.
Speakers
The turntable’s small output cannot drive passive speakers directly without amplification and the correct phono stage.
Grading
Discogs uses Goldmine-style grades, but sellers apply them with different care; read notes and return terms.
Pressings
Different masterings and manufacturing runs can sound different, but price and rarity do not guarantee better audio.
Cleaning
A dry brush removes loose surface dust; wet cleaning needs suitable fluid, clean tools and complete drying.
Storage
Records should stand vertically, supported without leaning, away from heat, sunlight and damp.

Make the playback chain predictable before judging records
Connect and place the turntable
Put the deck on level stable furniture isolated from the speakers. On an AT-LP60X or PS-LX310BT, select the built-in line output when connecting to powered speakers or an AUX input. Remove transport restraints, fit the platter and belt exactly as the manual shows and keep the dust cover and cables clear of movement.
Buy records with evidence
Start with music you already know and will replay. For used purchases, read the exact media and sleeve grade, inspect photographs and seller feedback and distinguish pressing identity from a generic album title. Do not pay a collectible premium until matrix markings, edition and condition have been checked.
Handle and clean gently
Hold a record by the edge and labelled centre, place it on a clean platter and remove loose dust with a suitable brush while it rotates only as the tool directs. Clean the stylus from back to front with the maker-approved method. Never scrub sideways into the cantilever or use household sprays.
Diagnose before upgrading
Replay the same passage after cleaning the record and stylus, check speaker placement and confirm the deck is level. Swap only one record or connection at a time. A click in the same groove points toward the disc; distortion on every disc may indicate stylus wear, overload or alignment that needs service.

Use a familiar new pressing, a conservatively graded used record and one inexpensive imperfect copy to learn what condition sounds like.

Protect hearing, the stylus and the collection
Records are physically robust enough for ordinary use but heat, pressure, abrasive cleaning and careless stylus handling cause permanent damage.
- Keep listening levels moderate and take breaks; surface noise does not make high volume safe.
- Unplug before cleaning the turntable or handling exposed connections and follow electrical and belt-installation instructions.
- Handle cleaning fluids with ventilation and label care, keep them from children and pets and never mix household chemicals.
- Lower the stylus with the cueing mechanism, clean only in the safe direction and replace a damaged or worn stylus.
- Store records upright away from radiators, sunlight, damp and heavy leaning pressure and secure tall shelving to the wall.

When outside help earns its place
Manufacturer manuals and careful comparisons are enough to start. A reputable hi-fi dealer becomes useful when auditioning speakers, checking a stylus or setting up an adjustable tonearm.
Use the exact release data and seller grading definitions before buying used copies.
Ask what alignment, stylus inspection and measurements are included rather than paying for vague “tuning”.
