A small project can still look uneven when joints drift, adhesive rises between tiles or grout is wiped too early.
Base
Wood, board, glass and concrete move and absorb differently; an indoor kit is not automatically weatherproof.
Pieces
Thickness and edge sharpness affect level, comfort and grout coverage. Mix materials only when compatible.
Cutting
Nippers remove small bites rather than making perfectly straight saw cuts and can throw sharp fragments.
Adhesive
Too much squeezes into joints; too little leaves hollow weak contact. Follow the product’s bed and cure instructions.
Joints
Consistent spacing helps grout support the design, but hand-cut work does not need machine-perfect gaps.
Cleanup
Grout haze is removed in timed passes with a damp—not flooding—sponge and a later dry polish.

Design for the materials and environment first
Choose an honest first surface
Use an indoor coaster, small plaque or kit base no larger than an open hand. Confirm the adhesive and grout are intended for the tile and backing. Do not describe a wooden or PVA-bonded object as outdoor, food-contact or heatproof without manufacturer support for the complete system.
Dry-lay from the focal shape outward
Draw two or three large regions rather than a detailed picture. Sort tesserae by colour and size, place the important line first and maintain deliberate gaps using visual judgement or small temporary spacers. Photograph the complete dry layout and keep each region in a labelled tray while gluing.
Cut only where the design needs it
Wear safety glasses, close shoes and suitable gloves for handling sharp material. Use wheeled nippers for glass or the tool specified for the chosen ceramic, taking small controlled bites into a tray or contained area. Never hold a piece near the face and discard razor-like chips safely.
Glue, cure, grout and polish
Lift and replace a manageable group at a time, pressing into a thin even adhesive layer without filling the joint. Let it cure for the full stated time. Mix a small grout batch, work it diagonally into gaps, remove excess in stages and polish haze only when the instructions say the surface is ready.

- Wear safety glasses when cutting and contain fragments in a tray; use closed shoes and collect every sharp chip.
- Follow adhesive, grout and sealer labels for gloves, ventilation, mixing, skin contact and disposal.
- Avoid dry sweeping, sanding or grinding silica-containing tile and grout; use wet methods and appropriate professional controls.
- Keep tools, small tesserae and chemical products away from children and pets and never use food utensils for mixing.
- Make heavy wall pieces with a backing and hanging system rated for the total weight and installation surface.
