For the quickest route, buy a healthy compact chilli plant in spring. To grow from seed, start a manageable Jalapeño early with warmth, then give the seedlings far more light, root space and time than the packet-sized beginning suggests.

If the growing season is already underway, buy a healthy labelled compact chilli plant from a reputable nursery, quarantine it and move it gradually into stronger light. For the full seed route, sow a Jalapeño in late winter or early spring using steady warmth for germination, then move seedlings immediately into strong light and pot them on before roots become cramped.

A seed begins in a tiny cell but a productive plant needs a substantial pot, strong sun or grow light, steady warmth and months of attention.
Germination
Even warmth speeds many varieties, but seed age and type create a broad window. Do not keep digging to check.
Seedlings
Long pale stems indicate insufficient light. Air movement and correct spacing help stronger growth after emergence.
Potting on
Roots circling a small pot and fast drying show that the plant needs more volume. Move in sensible stages rather than one huge cold wet pot.
Flowering
Indoor flowers may need gentle movement or hand pollination. Extreme heat can also cause blossom drop.
Feeding
High nitrogen can make abundant leaves with fewer flowers. Use a balanced stage-appropriate feed at the stated rate.
Ripening
Fruit changes flavour and heat as it colours. A late crop may need protection, but indoor winter growth needs enough light to remain healthy.

The quick plant route
Choose a compact named variety with healthy leaves, no sticky pests and roots that have not collapsed in stagnant compost. Keep it separate from houseplants at first. Acclimatise it over several days to a sunny windowsill, greenhouse or sheltered outdoor position after frost risk.
The seed route
Sow two or three Jalapeño seeds in separate modules of fresh seed compost at the packet depth. Use the heated propagator to maintain the recommended germination environment, not to bake wet compost. Check moisture and ventilation daily. The moment seedlings emerge, give strong light and remove excessive humidity.
Pot on by root and water behaviour
Move a seedling when roots hold the compost and the small pot dries rapidly, using a slightly larger draining pot. Bury only as the plant guidance permits. Turn indoor plants for even light and use a gentle fan or movement to strengthen stems without chilling them.
Support flowering and fruit
Feed established plants with an appropriate chilli or tomato fertiliser at the current label rate. Tap flowers or use a soft brush indoors. Stake before heavy fruit bends the stem, harvest with scissors and wash hands after handling fruit and cut surfaces.

Raise one Jalapeño seedling
Follow the current seed packet for sowing window and depth. Outside that useful UK seed window, choose the young-plant route instead of trying to recover lost months with heat.

Treat chillies as food and capsaicin as an irritant

- Check plant and fruit safety for household pets and prevent access to compost, feed and fallen fruit.
