Beginner’s guide · Move & explore
Three-dart groups that land consistently on the board
Measure the board correctly before changing the throw.
Start with a regulation bristle board, surround and one matched steel-tip set in a controlled indoor lane. Consistent stance, release and scoring matter more than buying many barrel shapes.
Quick answer
Install a regulation board and group darts at the large single segments
Mount a quality bristle board securely with the bull centre 1.73 m from the floor and mark the steel-tip oche 2.37 m horizontally from the board face, confirming current competition rules. Fit a proper surround and establish a closed throwing lane where nobody can enter from the side or behind the board. Use one matched medium-weight steel-tip set, stand comfortably at the line and throw three darts at the large single 20 area, prioritising a repeatable motion and full safe retrieval cycle.
- 01
Steel-tip and soft-tip setups use different boards and measurements. This guide covers steel-tip darts.
- 02
A surround protects only the immediate wall. It does not make a doorway, shared walkway or fragile room into a safe lane.
- 03
Barrel grip and weight are personal; one conventional matched set teaches enough to make later comparison meaningful.
- 04
Never retrieve darts until every thrower has finished, acknowledged the score and stepped back from the line.
What to expect
What the first darts result really teaches
Early improvement is mostly reducing variation in stance, sight line and release. Chasing treble 20 can hide useful grouping progress.
Mount
A loose or tilted board changes bounce-outs and measurements; use the maker’s correct fixing and rotate the number ring.
Lane
Control access physically and verbally, with lighting that removes shadows and no cross-traffic.
Stance
Choose a balanced foot position behind the oche and keep it repeatable rather than leaning unsafely.
Throw
Move mainly through the forearm, release without a violent snap and follow through toward the intended area.
Group
Aim at a large single segment and measure group spread before focusing on score.
Retrieve
Approach only after the turn, pull near the barrel with controlled twist and walk back outside the lane.
Core method
Build one repeatable darts workflow
Create a genuinely controlled lane
Select a solid mounting wall with no doors, windows, screens or valuable items around it. Fix the board according to its weight and instructions, install a full surround, mark the exact board-face oche distance and use bright even lighting. Establish a barrier or household rule that prevents unexpected entry.
Choose one neutral dart setup
Use three identical straight or lightly shaped barrels in a middle weight with standard shafts and flights. Tighten parts, inspect steel points and place unused darts in a holder. Do not sharpen points into needles; maintain only the condition recommended by the manufacturer.
Build a balanced throw
Place the lead foot behind the line, distribute weight without falling forward and bring the dart to a comfortable repeatable sight position. Make a smooth forearm motion, release and follow through. Keep the non-throwing hand and spare darts controlled.
Score grouping before doubles
Throw ten three-dart visits at the large single 20 or 19 bed. Photograph or note the group centre and widest spread, then practise round-the-clock singles. Finish with a simple game such as 301 only after scoring and retrieval are fluent.
Useful products
Products with a clear job in the setup
The Winmau Blade 6 surround set is the complete home route with board, protection and darts; the Red Dragon Javelin is a useful separate barrel option; the individual Blade 6 is for a room that already has surround and darts. Choose the complete set or build deliberately, not both boards.
Winmau Blade 6 Dartboard, Surround and Darts Set
It avoids a bare-board setup and provides enough equipment for two players to learn safely.
Red Dragon Javelin Series 24 g Tungsten Darts
The simple long grip and common weight make technique comparison easier than an ornate novelty barrel.
Winmau Blade 6 Professional Bristle Dartboard
It is a durable conventional foundation and can be rotated to distribute wear.
First project
Record ten safe three-dart groups
Group size and a flawless lane routine are better first measures than a lucky high score.
- 01
Measure and secure the board
Use current WDF dimensions and the board-face oche distance.
- 02
Close the lane
Check doors, people, pets, wall protection and lighting.
- 03
Inspect one matched set
Tighten shafts and reject damaged points or flights.
- 04
Throw at a large single
Repeat stance and follow-through for three darts.
- 05
Score and retrieve together
Wait for the full turn and approach only after agreement.
- 06
Log ten groups
Track spread and centre before chasing trebles.
What can wait
What can wait until the first result
Many barrel sets, electronic scoring and tournament cabinets can wait until a safe lane and repeatable release exist.
- 01
Several dart weights
One matched middle-weight set creates a useful baseline for later trials.
- 02
Aggressive point sharpening
Needle points damage boards and increase injury risk; follow maker maintenance.
- 03
An automatic scorer
Mental arithmetic and deliberate score calling are part of the first game.
- 04
A board without surround
Misses are normal and the immediate wall needs protection.
- 05
Outdoor improvised play
Wind, bystanders, hard bounce surfaces and uncontrolled access make steel tips inappropriate.
Upgrade path
Upgrade the repeated limitation
Upgrade barrel fit, lighting or scoring only when the safe physical lane is already complete.

Steel points require a controlled throwing lane
Darts can cause penetrating injury and property damage. Physical access control, stable mounting and an agreed throw–score–retrieve sequence are mandatory.
- Never throw unless the full lane and board area are clear and nobody can enter unexpectedly; supervise children and exclude pets.
- Store steel-tip darts in a closed case or holder, points down or covered, and keep them inaccessible when the lane is not active.
- Retrieve only after every player has completed the turn and the score is agreed; walk rather than rush and remove darts near the barrel.
- Mount the board securely, use a surround and floor protection and stop if fixtures, points, barrels or shafts are damaged.
- Keep feet behind the oche, avoid unstable leaning and do not play when impaired by alcohol, medication or fatigue.
Outside help
When outside help earns its place
A correctly installed home lane supports self-directed grouping. A darts club is useful for trying barrel shapes before buying, learning scoring etiquette and receiving stance feedback.
Use current board and oche measurements and scoring rules.
