Learn one mahjong family, not a blended internet version

Choose Japanese riichi rules and a complete riichi set with four suits of standard tiles, red fives, dice, dealer marker and scoring sticks. Use the 2025 European Mahjong Association rules or a reputable beginner reference. Play the first rounds with hands open, no money and simplified score keeping. Practise drawing, discarding, calls and completing four groups plus a pair with at least one yaku.

The quick answer
  1. 01

Mahjong is a family of games. Chinese, Hong Kong, Japanese riichi and American mahjong use different sets, hands, calls and scoring.

  2. 02

A structurally complete riichi hand still needs at least one yaku to win; a dora is a bonus and is not itself a yaku.

  3. 03

Tiles circulate through draw and discard order; calls change turn order and often close off concealed-hand options.

  4. 04

Do not introduce gambling. Points are a game score and can be tracked with sticks or paper without money.

Tile recognition arrives before scoring fluency

New players can learn the turn in one sitting, but yaku, waits, defensive discards and complete score calculation take repeated games.

01

Tiles

Dots, bamboo, characters, winds and dragons form the basic set; flowers are not used in standard riichi.

02

Turn

Normally draw one tile and discard one, keeping thirteen between turns and fourteen while choosing the discard.

03

Calls

Chi, pon and kan expose tiles and affect turn order, hand value and which yaku remain available.

04

Riichi

Declaring riichi requires a closed ready hand, a points deposit and commitment to the wait.

05

Winning

Ron wins on another player’s discard and tsumo on a self-draw, subject to yaku and furiten rules.

06

Defence

Visible discards become evidence; safe-tile judgement is a later skill but explains why the table tracks each discard carefully.

Make the turn and hand structure visible

Inventory the exact set

Confirm the four copies of each suited and honour tile, the red fives used by the chosen rules, dice, east marker and enough scoring sticks or a paper alternative. Remove flower or joker tiles that belong to other variants. Arrange an image reference where every symbol and name can be seen.

Build hands openly

Deal according to the chosen beginner method and place all hands face up. Name a sequence, triplet, pair and isolated tile. On each turn, draw, state the intended group structure and discard. Allow discussion of calls and make players return a mistaken tile rather than hiding the learning point.

Require one visible yaku

Use a tiny first list such as riichi, all simples, value-honour triplet or all sequences under the exact rule conditions. Before claiming a win, identify the four groups, pair, wait and yaku. Ignore advanced fu calculation initially and use a trusted scoring reference after hand legality is established.

Close hands gradually

Play one concealed practice hand at a time while keeping a public discard grid. Encourage players to sort by suit without revealing exact tiles. Stop after a short east-only round, review one call and one missed legal hand, then reset rather than continuing while everyone is tired.

Products with a clear job in the setup

The black Yellow Mountain Imports set is a complete riichi route. Its larger white set improves symbol visibility for some players. Daina Chiba’s book is a focused rules reference; buy one tile set, not both.

Play two open hands and one concealed hand

The sequence reveals hand structure first, then adds memory and hidden information without jumping straight to full scoring.

  1. 01

    Sort and verify tiles

Remove variant extras and identify every suit, wind, dragon and red five.

  2. 02

    Build the wall together

Use the chosen rules reference and explain dealer and draw direction.

  3. 03

    Play the first hand open

Name each draw, possible group and discarded tile and correct turn order openly.

  4. 04

    Check every win claim

Find four groups, a pair, the wait and at least one valid yaku.

  5. 05

    Repeat with limited calls

Explain how chi and pon change order and close parts of a hand.

  6. 06

    Play one concealed hand

Keep discards orderly, use a reference and stop for a short review afterward.

What can wait until the first result

A clear legal hand matters before complete score arithmetic or expensive furniture.

  • 01

    An automatic mahjong table

Hand-building walls teaches tile count and costs nothing beyond the set.

  • 02

    Combining regional rules

Flower tiles, jokers, hands and calls belong to specific variants and create contradictions when mixed.

  • 03

    Memorising every yaku

A short beginner list produces legal games while the turn becomes automatic.

  • 04

    Playing for money

Scoring sticks already provide consequence without financial or social risk.

  • 05

    Tournament pace

Open practice and reference checking are appropriate until tile recognition and legal wins are dependable.

Upgrade the repeated limitation

Add better reference, table comfort or formal scoring only when regular games justify it.

Keep play inclusive, non-gambling and physically comfortable

Mahjong is safe, but small heavy tiles, long sessions, noise, rules conflict and gambling pressure deserve explicit boundaries.

  • Keep small pieces, dice, sleeves and batteries away from young children and pets.
  • Use a well-lit table, support posture and take movement and visual breaks during long sessions.
  • Agree the game, time limit, content boundaries and stopping point before play so social pressure does not override comfort.
  • Store components dry and secure and wash hands before handling shared cards, tiles or painted miniatures.
  • Treat collecting spend as entertainment, not guaranteed investment, and use a fixed budget that does not depend on resale.

When outside help earns its place

The book and open hands can teach a home group. A riichi club or supervised online table helps with scoring and etiquette once the basic turn is reliable.
